Today, the winners of the fifth Jerwood/FVU Awards 2018 have been announced as Maeve Brennan and Imran Perretta. With £20,000 awarded to each emerging artist – both still in the first five years of their practise – “to develop significant new moving-image works”.

UCL graduate Imran Perretta has already had his work – which spans moving image, performance, installation and drawing – exhibited at Wysing Arts Centre in Cambridge, Jerwood Space, Chisenhale Gallery and Arcadia Missa in London, Copenhagen Art Week and Bloomberg New Contemporaries, World Museum, Liverpool and ICA, London.

Goldsmiths graduate Maeve Brennan, now based between Beirut and London, has had recent solo shows at Chisenhale Gallery, London and Outpost, Norwich, with upcoming solo shows planned this year at Spike Island in Bristol, The University of Manchester and Lismore Castle Arts.

The Award’s fifth edition, themed Unintended Consequences, “addresses how the best-laid plans can unravel and well-intentioned actions can provoke unexpected side-effects.” Maeve’s work intends to consider the effects of wind turbines in the larger ecosystem, while Imran will look at the dehumanisation of refugees.

Imran and Maeve were selected from over 170 applications by a judging panel made up of Noor Afshan Mirza, artist and co-founder of no.w.here, George Vasey, a Turner Prize 2017 curator and curatorial fellow at Newcastle University, Steven Bode, director at FVU and Sarah Williams, Jerwood Visual Arts’ head of programme.

“I was amazed at the quality and breadth of great applicants for this year’s Jerwood/FVU Awards and it was a very difficult decision to shortlist from the many applications,” George Vasey said. “Maeve Brennan and Imran Perretta’s proposals felt rigorous, considered and prescient. Both these artists make serious art for serious times, and I’m hugely excited to see what they can do with the money and support from FVU and Jerwood Charitable Foundation at a formative moment in their careers.”

Steven Bode added: ”The shortlist for this year’s Jerwood/FVU Awards was the strongest yet – a reflection of the depth of talent in this country, and of the continuing interest in the moving image. We look forward to working closely with Maeve Brennan and Imran Perretta over the coming months."

The films will be shown 6 April to 3 June 2018 at Jerwood Space, Southwark before touring the UK.
