Yayoi Kusama: Obliteration Room

One Londoner could win the chance to have contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama transform their Airbnb into an immersive, livable work of art. In a collaboration with the Tate Modern, the project invites London-based Airbnb hosts to apply for one room in their listing to be customised by one of Japan’s most renowned artists. Yayoi is known for her polka dot and mirrored room installations, such as Infinity Mirrored Room; I’m Here, but Nothing; and Obliteration Room.

The Tate Modern staged the UK’s largest major exhibition on Yayoi’s work in 2012, and stated as part of the exhibition literature that much of her work “has been marked with obsessiveness and a desire to escape from psychological trauma” since living voluntarily in a psychiatric institution since 1977. The Tate’s explanation of the 87-year-old’s work gives a preview as to what the London Airbnb host can expect from their home makeover. “In an attempt to share her experiences,” the Tate adds, “she creates installations that immerse the viewer in her obsessive vision of endless dots and nets or infinitely mirrored space.”

Current Airbnb hosts can apply for the opportunity via the Tate website, and will be asked to explain why their space should be chosen. Applications are open until 10 May. The installation will be completed in time for the opening of the new Tate Modern.
