Images packed with life, leather and charm in Bex Day’s new series for Pylot

Ah Bex Day; the photographer who manages to make a big hairy bum crack into something rather charming. We first became enamoured with her work back in early 2015 thanks to a series packed with, as we termed it, “hairy, sunny, smiley biker love.”

Shot around London’s iconic biker spot Ace Café, the images formed a love affair between the photographer and her leathered-up subjects, and she has since gone on to shoot more images of biker culture.

This latest shoot, for Pylot magazine, once again shows Bex’s knack for bringing out the life and joie de vivre in everyone and everything she shoots, whether it’s a scene of the Wheel of Death at its quietest or a wizened biker chap lolling about in the grass. The Biker Bred series was shot at the MCN Biker Festival in Peterborough. “I was very pleased to meet such a variety of people who were all extremely friendly and welcoming, and very happy that there were such a huge number of females too!” says Bex.

The lighting and the sense of movement and fun are glorious, and make the scenes in each image feel utterly immediate. But what really makes it work is the sense of both one grand narrative running through the series, and the stories of the individuals that star in it. “I think one thing all the people I met had in common was they are not afraid to die. The number of people missing limbs or bandaged body parts was a wake up call to how dangerous riding a motorbike really can be,” says Bex.
