Call for Collaboration is an It’s Nice That x Dropbox Paper project connecting creatives from across the world to collaborate on fun, fully commissioned creative projects. Each month we’ll spotlight the projects on It’s Nice that and show how Dropbox Paper helps these great ideas come to life.
After collaborating with Kelly Anna and Actual Source, the next instalment of our Call for Collaboration project will turn to photography with Mahaneela, a one-woman creative powerhouse working predominantly within the fields of photography, film and music. Exploring the theme of “Modern Love” to creatively interpret, Mahaneela and the chosen entry will collaborate on a series of images to be printed on a limited edition run of T-shirts.
Despite being possibly the exact example of a multi-faceted creative, Mahaneela still considers collaboration a necessary part of her many projects. “Collaboration is a huge part of my practice currently,” she tells us. “I have always worked closely with my friends to execute projects, from music videos to photoshoots.” And now Mahaneela is on the hunt for an entirely new collaborator, as “a further extension of that and an opportunity to work with new people with different skills than I’m used to.”
Mahaneela has settled on the theme of “Modern Love” to explore with a new creative partner. “For me, exploring relationships both with other people and myself has been a huge part of my 20s so far,” she notes. “I wanted to convey some of my personal experiences because I feel they could be relatable to people and, in a way, validate some of their experiences too.” As Mahaneela rightfully points out, “dating is a mine-field in your early 20s, and when your identity sits at the intersection of race, gender, sexuality and class, there are a unique set of experiences when trying to navigate love in the modern age.”
If this sounds like a theme you wish to explore too, Mahaneela is looking for an illustrator or mixed media artist to create a series of images collaboratively visualising modern love with photography. “I’m looking for ideally a really dope visual artist who works with collaging, and possibly paint, sketch and illustration too,” she explains. “I’m really looking forward to creating work with a collage in mind and seeing how this changes my process and challenges me conceptually!”
