Softly lift moments of youth caught in a Roman boxing club

As a fashion photographer, and a successful one at that, it has to be said that Carlotta Manaigo’s personal projects are in a league of their own. After recently featuring a series she shot in Sicily, we weren’t expecting her to get in touch with more work so soon, but while spending the autumn in Rome, she stumbled upon one of the oldest boxing gyms in the city. What she found inside was a group of fiercely determined teenagers, and a mix of innocence and budding machismo she couldn’t resist.

“Theirs is a very definite moment in youth, in between childhood and adulthood, purity and experience,” she says. Softly lit and still moody, the series is shot in both colour and black-and-white, and as ever, Carlotta frames even her more documentary projects with a fashion lens. “I am interested in capturing the spirit of a community or a group, while concentrating on the personal style and expression of individuals.”
