Illustrator Christian Schubert is back with more psychedelic weirdness
Illustrator Christian Schubert had only recently set out on his new career path when we featured his work last summer. But since then he’s had commissions from Bloomberg Businessweek and Lucky Peach magazine, who were two of his “dream clients,” according to Christian. “They both gave me really interesting and fun briefs and allowed a lot of freedom for me to do my thing,” he says.
With slightly bigger clients, Christian’s work has become more refined but it’s great to see his penchant for the unusual still remains strong. Both unnerving and funny, Christian’s mischievous characters move in psychedelic worlds and the illustrator has also started creating gifs adding another layer to his work. “The gifs have had an impact on my style. In my older stuff I tended to overwork my images, which isn’t a bad thing as I like that look, but it becomes impractical when you then have to animate it,” he explains. “Now I try to hold back a bit and use block colours and simple geometric shapes to give my images more depth.”
