Berlin studio Yukiko talks us through the good-looking new issue of Flaneur

Johannes Conrad, one half of Berlin-based studio Yukiko along with Michelle Phillips, recently got in touch to share the kaleidoscopic new issue of Flaneur. It arrived in the studio in a bright blaze last week, and since the last issue we covered, the independent German magazine has undergone something of a design overhaul. The fifth issue tackles the city of Athens and centres on Fokionos Negri, a street that was once a river running through the Greek capital. According to Johannes, this is the magazine’s “most literary issue yet, and captures the layers of the street through the stories told to Flaneur by the local people.”

Talking about the issue’s redesign, he explained, “We decided to tighten some design rules. The grids and layout are simplified, and we’ve reduced it to three typefaces. Title pages have become more orderly and unified for the viewer to grasp the content more immediately, but nevertheless, we feel that we can still be free and have fun within these constraints.

“It still manages to be the most psychedelic issue yet,” he goes on. “It’s also the first time we’ve pushed the literary aspect of the magazine to the forefront by printing a text on the cover in silver foil instead of a photograph.”

An open magazine displays a contents page with a vibrant, psychedelic background of swirling red, blue and yellow. Bold, black typographic elements read “CONTENTS” and “THIS ISSUE’S”, layered over the colourful patterns.
