Game, Set, Match: Alex Blouin turns his lens on tennis fans
Alex Blouin’s Tennis series was shot during annual women’s tennis tournament the Roger’s Cup in Montreal this summer. However it was not the players but the game’s voyeurs — from ballboys to photographers to tournament officials — which caught Alex’s attention. As the Canadian photographer explained to It’s Nice That: “it’s a series documenting the many characters and roles that I found during that week of the tournament, and all throughout my days of being a ball boy myself as a kid.”
Matching his ever-present camera flash with an eye for timing, in Tennis, Alex manages to convey the heat and tension which underpinned the tournament. “I created the series to highlight the extreme concentration required in the sport, a characteristic that sometimes separates tennis from other sports,” Alex noted. “Since it’s not played as a team, it creates a certain isolation that reflects into the individuals in the crowd and working the tournament.”
