Garagisme: the publication redefining the art of the car

Date

Despite not being one of the most obvious products you’d associate with the arts, cars are one of the obtuse pieces of design in our everyday lives. Even if you can’t drive you’ve definitely ridden in one, there’s associated memories with your family car, or you might even have a favourite model which you lust after. This association we have with cars and its subsequent culture is the focus of Garagisme, a motor-based publication which utilises photography to show the art of the car.

By reflecting on “a new and unique outlook on the present, past and future of car culture,” Garagisme brings something alternate to magazine shelves which “is unseen within its genre,” the publication’s founder, Gilles Uzan, explains. “_Garagisme_ observes, dissects and analyses the car by going beyond its industrial form and technical performance.”

Now a two person operation of Gilles and Yego Moravia, the publication relaunched this year and moved base from Paris to Los Angeles.
By noticing that the car is far much more “than just a simple object of consumption, but instead a social phenomenon,” the magazine adds storytelling to a product most think of as just a simple vehicle of transport. The publication almost gives the car a voice and not one of Jeremy Clarkson, rather it questions “the creatures of the road by uniting the testimonies and images of contemporary artists, architects, writers and sociologists”.

Launching in 2012, Garagisme has previously released four issues, hosting a range of creative collaborators from Frank Ocean to Will Self. Its fifth issue focuses on a specific theme, or rather a specific model, the BMW E30, including “88 pages of visual essays on the cult car from the 1980s”. From photographs of old models in dusty settings, to digital renders that add futuristic qualities, each issue of Garagisme is then paired with contemporary design qualities and squared typography which subtly emulates the car logos we know so well.
