Had enough of the internet? Come see what Jay Cover's been up to!

I was just starting to think I’d seen all there is to see on the internet this week; Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith announced they’re getting a divorce and ruined romance forever, hoverboards became a thing and then immediately not a thing anymore, illustration projects started to resemble each other so much they were swimming in front of my eyes. And then along marched Jay Cover to prop my eyelids up with cocktail sticks and flash some lovely new characters in front of them, and made this strange digital landscape look actually quite interesting again.

An artist, illustrator and one third of excellent visual arts collective Nous Vous, Jay’s new series Does That Clock Work started to crop up on Instagram a few days ago: four sweet, large-nosed characters in super simple black pencil, picnicing in the park, chatting at dinner parties, floating surreptitiously in pools. They’re the kind of figures I could read whole books about, as pared-back and curious as they are, and they’re a delightful change of pace from some of the busier, more self-referential stuff out there. A breath of fresh air in a badly ventilated room, is Jay.
