Milleunomiglia creates dynamic typeface for a proposed university identity

Milleunomiglia is an interdisciplinary studio based in Italy, creating work for various institutions and creatives. Its latest project sees a proposed identity for the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli as part of a competition set by Aìap, the Italian Association for Visual Communication Design.

Milleunomiglia is made up of four designers who specialise in editorial design and digital design. “We decided to take part in the contest because it was an opportunity to demonstrate our skills as a design collective publicly,” says the studio. While the studio’s design wasn’t selected as the winner, Milleunomiglia used the process to apply its skills to a new kind of project.

The university rebrand is “combinatorial identity system” and uses the idea of exchanging knowledge as its inspiration. “The Vanvitelli University is a poly-centric structure, characterised by the union of the three poles of knowledge (humanistic, scientific, polytechnic) and intends to communicate itself as an inclusive, innovative, international and open institution,” explains the studio. “This inspired us to create a typographic language, thought up or thought through specifically for the university, an experimental font generated from a mixture of three typographic styles drawn on a geometric and modular basis.”

The typeface is dynamic and adaptable, and is generated by combining complementary shapes. Imagery and colour palette has been kept relatively simple allowing the font to be at the heart. Milleunomiglia sees the identity as a “dynamic, visual system” that connects the various part of the university. The result is a graphic and typographical identity that pushes the boundaries from the previous identity and feels contemporary and considered.
