Wilfrid Wood, Suzy Chan and Crack Magazine: Tickets are now available for February’s Nicer Tuesdays!

To kick off a new year of Nicer Tuesdays, we’ve got an incredible line-up of creatives ready and waiting to give you an insight into their creative worlds. They’ll be sharing wisdom on finding inspiration, honing your methods and creating work that stands out from the crowd.

Our last Nicer Tuesdays saw out 2022 with a bang. Now, after taking a well-earned break in January, we couldn’t be more excited to get a brand new year of Nicer Tuesdays cracking. It’s safe to say we’ve rubbed our creative heads together to get the best line-up possible and, of course, the event will come with its usual fine selection of bonuses. Love Corn snacks? Tick. Tequila and tonic? Tick. Market of incredible independent makers to buy your loved one a handmade gift, just in time for Valentines day? Tick. So shake off the post-Christmas blues (we know it’s still lingering) and get yourself booked into an event that’s sure to get those creative juices flowing!

At the event, we’ll be getting a look into the maximalist, socially conscious work of graphic designer Suzy Chan, and taking a tour through Crack Magazine’s illustrious bi-annual publication. Then, filling our Q&A spot will be one of London’s finest and funniest portrait artists, Wilfrid Wood. A master of injecting humour into his characterful work, and known for his unrelenting candour, we can promise this really – really – won’t be one to miss.

The event will take place on 7 February with doors opening at 6pm. As this is an 18+ event, please bring ID with you to the venue. If you are in need of disability access, please make yourself known to a member of the EartH team on the evening or email hello@nicertuesdays.com so we can arrange assistance. Carry on reading to find out more about our incredible panel of speakers.

Suzy Chan came crashing onto the It’s Nice That radar way back in 2019 when she was featured in 2019’s edition of The Graduates. Since then, we haven’t been able to get enough of her kitsch and incredibly maximalist work, and it seems neither have you. Alongside such arresting visuals, Suzy manages to get across pertinent social commentary, from designing for protests to raising awareness of the children who grow up in China’s factories. During her talk, she’ll be covering themes as diverse as how cultural differences inspire her work, making her own brand, and living and working across multiple continents. Expect a country-hopping talk that is sure to leave its audience thinking.

Since its first issue in 2009, Crack Magazine has come to be one of the most respected publications in the UK’s cultural scene. Having seen the likes of SOPHIE, Thom Yorke, Jeff Mills, Gorillaz, Kano and Steve Lacy in amongst its pages, for 14 years, the magazine has been at the forefront of platforming greats and sourcing new talent. This was only proven in 2019 when it released a book in celebration of its 10 year anniversary, which explored some of its most iconic shoots to date. At February's Nicer Tuesdays, Crack Magazine will be walking the audience through its most recent bi-annual magazine, explaining what the timeline looks like, how they source their cover stars and what the design process looks like. A sucker for all things print? This talk will be right up your street.

Wilfrid Wood is an artist known equally for his ability to capture likeness (not always in the most flattering of ways), and his desire to speak openly about his work, inspiration, likes and dislikes. It’s perhaps most apt to introduce the artist with some of his own words: “Sometimes a stunning fashion model walks through the door and I do a crap picture of them. Sometimes a mouldy old potato walks through the door and I do a drawing we both like.” For much of his career, Wilfrid mainly worked in sculpture, but now, lots of his work now veers towards the colourfully illustrative side. And in 2021, we saw one of his biggest drawn series with faces sourced off Instagram. He does, however, still get his hands stuck into some clay once in a while (see brilliant recent rendition of Rishi Sunak). With Wilfrid’s brilliant and brutally honest perceptions about creativity, politics and wider society, this Q&A is set to be one for the memory books.
