Tickets available for January Nicer Tuesdays Online featuring a brand new format

Addressing the theme of ‘creative responses to crisis’, Paola Antonelli and Poulomi Basu are kicking off this year’s first online event, which also features a brand new format.

Now that it’s 2021, we’ve decided to shake things up when it comes to Nicer Tuesdays Online. We’ve witnessed thousands of you creative-minded enthusiasts gather for our monthly online event since we went virtual last March, and we’ve been truly overwhelmed by the dazzling array of speakers and audience members we’ve been able to connect with from around the globe. So, with the turn of the new year, we’ve decided to keep things fresh and revamp the Nicer Tuesdays Online format as well.

The event will still happen monthly, still take place on our online events platform, and still be affordable with our tiered, “pay-what-you-can” ticketing system. The main change is that we’re reducing the total number of talks per event from four to two, but giving each speaker a little more time to discuss their creative projects and to answer questions submitted by you in the audience. This means that the total duration of the event will be closer to 45 minutes, but that time will be more focused than ever on in-depth discussion and unpacking thorny questions. This month’s event will kick off at 6 pm GMT on 26 January 2021.

With that in mind, we’re beyond pleased to welcome two stellar speakers to January’s event: photographer Poulomi Basu and curator and writer Paola Antonelli. In another new twist to the Nicer Tuesdays format, our speakers will now be connected by a shared theme. For January, this theme is ‘Creative responses to crisis’, a pressing topic that is likely to resonate with what our audience and more widely, our industry, have been going through in the past year. If you’d like to know more about our two highly anticipated speakers, and what you can find at January’s new event, read on below.

Design Emergency

Paola Antonelli

The curator, writer and editor is best known for being senior design curator at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and has curated and written a number of exhibitions and articles for the industry too. A former lecturer at Harvard University Graduate School of Design’s programme, Paola has crafted an impressive career to date centred on a design philosophy that appreciates the role of design in everyday life. Her latest endeavour touching on this is Design Emergency, a new project created in collaboration with design critic Alice Rawsthorn. It began as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic in a series of Instagram Live stories and rapidly expanded into its own platform exploring the role of design in building a better future. Telling stories from a range of industry experts including architects, engineers and scientists, Design Emergency interrogates past responses to crises, traumas and tragedies. At this month’s Nicer Tuesdays, Paola will further discuss the new platform with our audience in an in-depth Q&A exploring some of the most pressing issues we are facing today.

Poulomi Basu

Poulomi Basu is an Indian transmedia artist, photographer and activist, advocating for women’s rights in her powerful work. For the past nine years, she has been working on an Indian docu-fiction titled Centralia, a photographic exploration into the little-known forests of central India. Here, she’s documented an under reported conflict between the indigenous tribal people and the Indian state. Having exhibited at Arles, the acclaimed series has awarded Poulomi the Louis Roederer Discovery Award 2020 and she’s been shortlisted for the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2021. The powerful work which sheds light on the violence inflicted upon indigenous communities has also been pulled together in a new book of the same title. At January’s Nicer Tuesdays, the photographer will take us through the striking project and the important stories impacted by the conflict.
