Founder of Somersault Records, designer Jean-Pierre Consuegra’s first foray into design was when he downloaded Photoshop to make visuals for his label and then pretty much every club in New York – namely his horde of incredibly beautiful, posters and one off flyers for gigs and events. The designers unique mix of references mined from internets past has birthed a visual style that looks like no other and led him to collaborate with artists like Clairo and Pigeons & Planes and as well as publications like The New York Times and music festivals such as All Points East and Olivia Rodrigo’s, Daisy Chain Fields.
We chat to the designer as he opens the doors to his independent studio and a new stage of his practice: Indie Darling Studios – “the culmination of everything I’ve done and learned so far in this very hectic and ever evolving field of graphic design,” he says. Jean Pierre’s hilarious anecdotes and great taste certainly don’t disappoint in this weekend guide. Strap in to find out about which new HBO show he thinks deserves a standing ovation, the very serious design talks he’ll be attending and the food spots that have stayed off the beaten track of the NYC Tik Tok foodie hellscape.

“The real answer for this is taking myself to the movies alone and grabbing a coffee. But the designy answer is probably any of the talks held at Pentagram after hours. I recently met up with some friends and went and saw Richard Turley hold a talk there but unfortunately I had a panic attack in the middle of his presentation and had to leave early lol.”
I’ll be reading…
“To be quite honest, I don’t really read much. But I do have a first edition copy of Tibor Kalman’s Perverse Optimist sitting on my coffee table that I try to read whenever I feel a bit overwhelmed with my work weeks. Unfortunately, I’ve been finding myself working over the weekends but I try to give myself some slow mornings where I drink some coffee and flick through it to try and get some sort of inspiration. I was also fortunate enough to get a copy of James Ronkos & Manuela Press’ The Swamp that’s filled with incredible design and creative writing.”
I’ll be eating...
“On my perfect and ideal weekend I’d probably be at La Cantine’s dinner service which they call Sunsets. La Cantine is a cafe in Bushwick that has a daily rotating lunch menu that is incredible. For a couple of years now they’ve started a dinner service where the menu changes every week – lots of stewed meats and fun small bites. A lot of the cooking feels like a nice home cooked meal which I really love. They also have a new flavour of tiramisu every week which is always a hit!
That place seems to be one of those places that has been able to stay somewhat off the horrid NYC Tik Tok foodie hellscape so getting a reservation is still quite easy thankfully. Hopefully it stays that way lol. I also just recently tried the newly opened BBQ place in Bushwick called Bark BBQ and it was incredible and also like 8 minutes from my house which is probably not so great for my health, but I digress.”
I’ll be watching...
“On my ideal weekend I’m sitting in my living room and watching Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation for the 500th time with my bluetooth airpod maxes connected to my TV with noise cancelling turned on. I can watch the movie any time anywhere. I throw it on while I work sometimes on mute.
As for TV, I watched the newest season of Industry wrapped not too long ago and that show is quickly becoming, in my opinion, the best show ever made (dramatic but true lol) I’m very vocal about my love for it so I somehow got invited by HBO to go see the premiere of one of the episodes at an event they were having in NY. At the end of the episode I was balling my eyes out and I tried to start a standing ovation and I guess no one else was feeling it so I was the only one that got up and fully embarrassed myself in front of the whole cast. The last season should be coming out some time next year so if there’s anyone at HBO reading this right now for the love of God please let me design something for it!”
Something I’ve got my eye on…
“I’m currently furnishing my office so I’m on the hunt for many different things actually. I recently got a custom desk from a studio out of Brooklyn called Think Later Studios who do a lot of cool woodwork. He used to work with Tom Sachs and a lot of his stuff has a similar vibe. He makes custom speakers which is something I’m eyeing up at the moment!
I’m also neighbours with a very cool design store out in east Williamsburg called Demolicion which is owned and operated by Pamela who is a great designer and her husband Alex who prints all of their clothes in their studio below the store. They always have really great selections of clothing and home goods so I always try and keep and eye out, I recently bought a beautiful red leather studded belt from them made by Yomahra.
I’ve also been obsessed with Henry Johnson’s souvenirs T-shirts where he cuts up a bunch of old vintage shirts and stitches them together to make beautiful Frankenstein souvenir shirts.”
This is on repeat in my headphones…
“The new Feeble Little Horse record has been on repeat since it came out. It’s incredible. That entire scene emerging out of Philly is so stacked: They Are Gutting a Body of Water, Her New Knife, Bleary Eyed, and so many others.
I’ve been really into this band from the 80s called The Gist. I’ve been rediscovering Evans Pyramids classic compilation record from his works in the 1970-80s. Oh and I cant stop listening to D.Silvestre’s O Que as Mulheres Querem which is a funk mandelão record thats super noisy and bassy – so good. Vegyn’s Project Headache is constantly being played in the house which probably drives my fiance crazy lol. Lots of different stuff really. I actually have a Spotify playlist that I add all the stuff I’ve been listening to in the studio so I’ll link that and you can dig through it!”
A memento from your weekend with me...
This is the space where creatives leave us with something to look at from the weekend we’ve spent with them. It could be anything really – a drawing, a picture or just something cool they think you should have a little look at.
“Truly I don’t need any of the stuff listed above to have an ideal weekend. I honestly stay in on the weekends a lot, especially with how busy work has been. The only real thing keeping me sane is my fiance Sayde and my dog Murphy. So I think this somewhat hectic picture of us taken in our living room by my dear friend and very talented photographer Stefaun Maldonado is the perfect memento.”
