Artist David Shrigley has collaborated with London-based spectacle maker Cubitts to create a glasses cloth inspired by the power of love. Launched today (14 February) to coincide with Valentine’s Day, the pink-hued accessory features a person staring into the eyes of their beloved with a blob-like figure reflected back in their sunglasses. The words “I loved you from the first moment I saw you” are written in Shrigley’s trademark scrawl at the bottom.

In a release about the project, Shrigley said: “Artists make things for people to look at. Spectacles help people to look at things more clearly. The lens cloth helps people to see things clearer still, therefore, this collaboration is a very good thing.”

The cloth has been made from recycled plastic, and will be sold to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, a charity that campaigns for visually impaired people and provides them with support, guide dogs and other mobility services. Shrigley, who chose the charity himself, said: “Many charities compete for our attention these days and sometimes the vital work that Guide Dogs does can be overlooked. This charity changes peoples’ lives and needs our support to continue.”

Over the past few years Cubitts has commissioned a number of artists to create charity cloths, including Tracey Emin and Camille Walala, raising more than £20,000. “We like to celebrate everyday objects, whether that be your spectacles or a quotidian cleaning cloth,” said Cubitts founder Tom Broughton. “I hope that each clean will bring a smidgen of joy into your life, and raise money for a very worthwhile cause.”
