Ghanaian practitioner Eric Gyami has become the 13th winner of the annual Foam Paul Huf Award, which is doled out once a year to photographic talent under the age of 35. He follows in the footsteps of talent like Alex Prager, Taryn Simon, and Romain Mader.

The 28-year-old economics and information studies graduate is currently studying for an MFA in the department of art and sculpture at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kusami, southern Ghana.

Named in honour of the eponymous Dutch photographer, the award tends to find its way into the hands of up-and-comers who work in a “distinctive and personal style, both formally and conceptually”.

The award was presented at a ceremony in Amsterdam yesterday, 5 March 2019. Eric wins €20,000 and will have a solo show hosted at the Foam gallery.

It was Eric’s “Trojan horse-like approach” to the medium which had the assembled jury members swooning. With his “beautiful, formal qualities”, in particular, singled out for praise.

“I am interested in what happens to the life of the photograph as it gets sited through time, through death,” the release heralding the victory quotes Eric as saying. “_Fixing shadows; Julius and I_, works on the space/life between two photographs, mapped/permuted through different times, encounters and potentialities, as they move through a certain death.”

Check out a selection of images from the series below.

Three high-contrast portraits of a person are printed on blue paper. The images are rendered in a grainy, ink-like style with deep black shadows.
