Google’s new professional women emojis aim to promote gender equality

Google has revealed there will be range of new professional female and male emojis, following its work with the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee to promote gender equality. Until now the emojis for men included a detective, a police officer and a doctor, while the options for female emojis included a princess, a bride and a girl getting a haircut. “More than 90 percent of the world’s online population use emoji,” Google says in statement, “but there aren’t a lot that highlight the diversity of women’s careers, or empower young girls.”

In May the company proposed a set of new emoji to represent a wider range of professions for women, as well as men, which have now been agreed by Unicode. There will be 11 new professional emojis in male and female options with all skin tones, and Unicode is adding male and female versions to 33 existing emojis. Now, both male and female emojis can be doctors and get haircuts!

Meanwhile to coincide with World Emoji Day this Sunday 17 July, Twitter has published some interesting data about our most tweeted symbols, which reveals international emotions.

The UK, USA and Canada’s top-tweeted emoji is Weary Face
for instance, while Italy’s is Sparkling Heart and France’s is Heart With Arrow . Columbia, Brazil and Argentina all tweet the Multiple Musical Notes the most. Also, apparently more people tweet beer emojis than coffee emojis.

Below is some more emojinformation to digest, and here you can watch Gavin Lucas, author of The Story of Emoji speaking at Nicer Tuesdays about how the symbols have come to transform the way we communicate.
