New Tate Modern due to open to the public in June 2016

Tate announced today that the new Tate Modern will open on Friday 17 June 2016. The new building has been designed by architects Herzog & de Meruon and is billed as the “most important new cultural building to open in the UK for almost 20 years.”

In the new Tate Modern there’s 60% more display space, and the gallery will feature over 250 artists from 50 artist when it opens. The Turbine Hall will become the heart of the new and improved Tate Modern, with the existing six-storey Boiler House on one side and the new ten-storey Switch House above the Tanks on the other. Tate director Nicholas Serota says: “The new Tate Modern is an instrument that will allow us to offer a rich variety of experiences to visitors and opportunities to artists.”
