Given the amount of rugs, busts, and David Bowie books that fill up the cavernous Kensington museum, it isn’t entirely surprising that the Victoria & Albert’s photography offerings can, at times, feel a little skimpy. That’s all set to change next October when the museum reveals a new photography space that’ll double the current space given over to the medium.

Over the next few years, extensive work will be carried out to add a browsing library, darkroom, studio, research and teaching facilities, as well as an expanded gallery space, with a projected 2022 open date for this second phase of the operation.

The museum has trumpeted this by announcing a new exhibition by fashion photographer Tim Walker, which is set to open in early September. His third solo show will feature responses to the museum’s existing collection, which the V&A’s director Tristram Hunt promises will see Walker “work his magic” with a brand new series of images.

The _Vogue_photographer will also be collaborating with art director Shona Heath on a range of films, installations, and sets that will be spread across the museums. So, peer into the court cast room, or deep into the knotty wooden crevices of one of the museum’s numerous ornate altarpieces and you might get a surprise.

The Tim Walker exhibition runs and V&A between 7 September 2019 to 8 March 2020.
