“Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” asked art historian Linda Nochlin in a provocative, much-quoted 1971 essay. The article’s title has since taken on a life of its own, even making it onto the opening look of Dior’s Paris SS18 show by way of a striped Breton T-shirt.

Work / Art Sarah Meyohas combines virtual reality, 10,000 roses and artificial intelligence in Cloud of Petals

The Bell Works, formerly known as the Bell Labs, in New Jersey was the birthplace of information technology and data theory as we know it. The complex was completed in 1962, one year after the death of its architect Eero Saarinen and features a dramatic Josef Albers-inspired atrium which, in the summer of 2016, played host to an in-situ data collecting ritual of over 10,000 roses by French-American artist Sarah Meyohas.

Work / World Mental Health Day Hospital Rooms uses visual art to spark positive change in service users

Hospital Rooms is an arts and mental health charity that believes in the “enduring power of the arts to instil value, dignity and wellbeing in people.” They work with mental health practitioners, service users and commission museum and gallery quality artists to create “site specific, inventive and compliant environments,” for predominantly secure and locked mental health units. They also run creative workshops for service users within said units.

Work / Art Inside artist Hassan Hajjaj’s “homecoming exhibition” at Somerset House

Hassan Hajjaj’s culture-clashing work is perhaps best described by way of his nickname, “the Andy Warhol of Marrakech”. This month, the British-Moroccan artist is taking over Somerset House in a “homecoming” exhibition in partnership with 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair, his first UK solo show in seven years. Hassan Hajjaj: La Caravane presents Hassan’s dynamic body of work across photography, performance, music, fashion and design to date and brings in new work in the form of photographs and sculptures which combine contemporary North African culture with globally familiar Western iconography.
