Bea de Giacomo photographs the wonders of pregnancy
Milan-based photographer Bea de Giacomo describes her aptitude to the medium as combining “elements hailing from different photographic fields”. As a result her portfolio mixes fashion, still life and snapshots with a client list of Gucci and Missoni, and publications such as Alla Carta and The Wire. However, it is a personal project of Bea’s Linea Alba, that displays her sensitive photographic ability, producing a series of images we couldn’t look away from.
The protagonist in Linea Alba Bea explains “is maternity, represented through a series of photographs which are so straightforward, that the weight and density of the womb can be perceived,” she says. “Here, maternity has an objective, sculptural, suspended presence, at the limit between the set of an advertising spot and the mystery of life.”
As a series, Linea Alba sees the photographer capturing images of her sister’s pregnancy with a closeness and intimacy that represents what a miracle the act of having the baby is, and the way the whole process seems almost otherworldly. Throughout the series you never see Bea’s sisters face, only represented through her brooding bump, photographed with ethereal lighting that adds an apt magic to each of the photographs. By focusing “especially on the belly, I explored with her the relationship between her transformed body and the space, and at the same time I started to bond with son,” explains the photographer.
Working on the project with a family member Bea also says that it has restored a new connection. “During this intimate and private moment, the nature of my relationship with them evolves and finds new meanings.”
