Photography: Ben Clement shows an alternative side to NYFW's street style

Street style photography has rapidly grown in importance at fashion weeks over the last couple of years, leaving actual catwalk reportage and photography cowering in its shadow. With this quick rise, however, comes the emergence of a new wave of fashion photographers; those who are less interested in capturing the detail of a pleat or the heel of a shoe and more concerned with the characteristics of show attendees while waiting to pile into venues.

Ben Clement is one such photographer. Last year he set off to loiter around the MM6 and J. Crew Shows for Acclaim magazine, shooting anything and everything that struck his fancy. And that ranged from cheesy grins and “NO PARKING” signs to people on their phones – lots of people on their phones, actually – caught in a moment of unguarded ignorance. His candid perspective of glitzy guests in their fanciest threads is a welcome alternative to flashy snapshots ready for the pages of a glossy mag, and we like them very much indeed.
