Bureau Hardy Seiler creates a jazzy identity for Hanover's free theatre

When Hanover-based designers Bureau Hardy Seiler and web design agency Created by Monkeys decided to pitch to design the identity for the Freies Theater Hannover, they found themselves faced with a dilemma. The theatre hosts every flavour of live performance going, from puppetry and musical shows to experimental dance, and all in one flexible and family-friendly space. How could they create a graphic language to match that?

Their solution takes the form of an identity littered with colourful geometrical shapes and recognisable forms, a clear and indisputably fun embodiment of variety. The programme, or “game-plan,” is a kind of folder containing various bright printed ephemera and relevant information. They’ve even cleverly incorporated the F, T and H of Freies Theater Hannover into the mathematical symbol representing equality, a motif which reappears throughout the identity, further signalling the cultural diversity the theatre represents. It’s entertaining and informative, and it’d look bloody great blu-tacked to your fridge.

Two sheets of stationery for “Freier Theater Hannover” float against a black background. One page is a white letterhead with a logo and a block of text, while the other features a bold, black abstract symbol over a colourful geometric pattern.
