Art: Fabian Oefner's up-close pictures of flames have to be seen to be believed

Twice over the past two years Swiss artist Fabian Oefner has blown our minds; first with his amazing watercolour and ferrofluid photographs and then with his uber-pleasing images made by spinning rods of paint. But let’s make that three out of three, because his latest work Aurora has left our jaws similarly dropped.

They make look like weird X-rays or scans of wild plants but they are actually flames, created in large glass vessels and captured by super-sensitive photographic equipment. As always with Fabian’s work the images stand up by themselves as beautiful, intriguing and compeling; finding out how they’re done only adds to the wonder.
