Powerful women illustrated by Brooklyn-based Hannah K Lee

It seems Brooklyn-based illustrator Hannah K Lee has a thing for powerful women in all their guises: temptresses, dancers, divorcees and even Medusa. Her portfolio is certainly a mixed one, and while it might suggest she’s still finding her style, there’s some real gems here for clients including Buzzed, The New York Times and The New Yorker.

One of the standout works is for the latter, commissioned to accompany a piece on the Trisha Brown Dance Company. The textures and shapes work beautifully against the fluid sense of movement of the dancers, and is cleverly framed by a large figure’s supple and straddling legs. Elsewhere, Hannah shows a nice flair for typographic illustration, with a flaccid set of balloons spelling out “Mrs” providing the perfect image for a piece examining a woman’s decision to keep her husband’s name after divorcing him.
