Jack Hudson has art directed and created 86 illustrations for The Earth and I, a book of essays exploring everything on the planet. From the tiniest cells to the immense structures of our world, this epic tome features writings on all aspects of Earth by some of the most respected science writers, brought together by 97-year-old scientific visionary James Lovelock, and Jack had the not-so-small task of illustrating the entire thing cover to cover.

“First of all I had to convince Taschen that I could draw pretty much everything that exists on the entire planet – no biggie!” says Jack. “The subject was so diverse and expansive – I had to tackle anything from supernovas, cells and quantum physics, to economics and population growth. We worked on it for around three years, so it’s been quite a journey, but really fulfilling. I think the best moments were the ideas stage, with five of us sat around a table sketching and discussing dozens of thoughts and ideas at the same time on Post-it notes. Then realising all those scribbles had to become fully fledged, detailed illustrations.”

The book features an energetic and vivid variety of illustration styles, from infographics and animated diagrams, to more expressive stand-alone artworks. The opening illustrations of each chapter were less tethered to a particular fact or figure, therefore a chance for Jack to stretch his legs. “Those allowed me to be a little more ambiguous and experimental with my ideas, while summarising the key ideas in the chapter. There were also some interesting visual metaphors to play with.”

“It’s difficult to choose a favourite, but I think I had the most fun trying to find a new approach to interpreting textbook-like images, such as the water cycle, in a visually exciting way. Also the opening illustration for Round and Round by Tim Radford was a particular highlight.”

The Earth and I is published on 1 October by Taschen. Jack Hudson was one of the It’s Nice That Graduates 2010.

An illustration of a large, pale pink cell with a ruffled edge at the centre of a red background. It is surrounded by a swirl of red blood cells and smaller, colourful organic shapes.
An open book showing two pages of a history text. The left page features an illustration of people in a prehistoric settlement, while the right page shows a figure standing beside an early industrial machine.
An illustration of a complex network of intersecting roads and highways seen from above. A white aeroplane flies over the scene, while cars and trucks navigate the grey lanes. A light blue banner across the centre reads “HOMO SAPIENS AND THE ANTHROPOCENE”.
An open book showing a spread titled “The Earth and I”. The left page contains two columns of text and a circular illustration of a dark nebula, while the right page features a vibrant, colourful illustration of a star exploding in a supernova.
An illustration of a cosmic scene on a deep purple background. A small, glowing white figure flies through space, leaving a bright blue trail that curves towards a central planet surrounded by concentric orbital rings and distant stars.
An open book showing a page of text and a large illustration of a person. A circular cutout in the person’s head reveals a miniature office scene with figures working at desks and a sign that reads “CONSCIOUS DELIBERATION”.
An illustration of a vertical, spiralling tower of landscapes against a blue background. Each level features a different environment, including a sunny beach, a motorway with cars, and deep blue ocean waters.
An illustration of a book cover on a bright yellow background. The left side shows a fragmented, colourful landscape of houses and nature experiencing extreme weather, while the right side reads “Sun and Superstorms” and “Our Changing Climate” by Vicky Pope.
An animation of a book cover titled “The Earth and I” by James Lovelock et al, published by Taschen. A circular illustration of Earth in the centre rotates slowly, showing various colourful icons of nature and technology.
