“My name is Matthew Frost and I make hilarious short films about famous people mostly.” So begins this excellent video profile of the brilliant British filmmaker but we’d go even further – his name’s Matthew Frost and he makes hilarious short films about famous people better than anyone else out there (from Kirsten Dunst and Lizzie Caplan to Jessica Chastain and Cate Blanchett).

This short is part of The Creators Class’ A New Breed series, and directors Adam Beck and Paul Johnston have put something together that’s far more interesting than your average creative snapshot. Matthew is a master of using observational details to lampoon wider cultural and societal trends, and so as you might expect he’s delightfully self-aware about the tricks and ticks these kinds of films often indulge in; “Matthew Frost playing Matthew Frost” as the filmmakers put it.

But amid all the tongue-in-cheekery there’s some nice insights into his approach, such as his desire to “leave a good chunk of the I-don’t-know-what-the-fuck’s-going-to-happen” and his neat summing up of his creative philosophy: “You’re lucky they’re wasting their time on your space and so making it short and sweet and simple is key.”

The final scene – with Matthew tunelessly warbling Everybody Hurts in a lonely karaoke booth on his birthday – is that perfect mix of funny and thought-provoking which Matthew himself so excels in.
