The sincere and composed photography of Morgan Hill-Murphy

Date

London-based photographer Morgan Hill-Murphy studied Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths and recently stirred an interest in philosophy and art theory. This led Morgan to make the conscious decision to disregard the areas of photography he was comfortable in to form “a new relationship with my craft as a more fluid means of representation.” This was due to evaluating his work personally: “I began to consider what habits and notions I’d fallen into simply by emulating those I admire,” he explains.

As a result Morgan set himself a brief to display the “more complex notions that were unique to my experiences. Anxiety, imperfection and discord all deserve to be included and the usual binaries of bad and good need not apply.” The result is a collection of sincere shots, candid in their honesty. Morgan’s use of light, composition and representative disposition is an aptitude that could only be developed by the decision to intrinsically look at his work, evaluating his influences.

Morgan’s work also considers relationships: “I thought a lot about the ups and downs of our relationship and the process of trying to do someone you love and admire and justice has changed my approach to photography forever.” The outcome of this consideration is thoughtful portraits in-situ that fulfil Morgan’s aim to “think less about an image in the traditional sense, moving towards trying to distill something more ambiguous.”

Inspired by his travels Morgan plans to “hopefully get a camper van and/or motorbike and make work which crosses boundaries and blurs borders in a morose post-Brexit UK.”
