Océane Bacher's graphic design bursting with cinematic influence
Océane Bacher’s work includes an array of contemporary cinematic influences. While studying at ECAL she “became particularly interested in the various visual languages graphic design has to offer.” This led the designer to culminate a portfolio that includes Kino Motel an identity for a film festival in Lausanne, Dire le vu, voir le dit a thesis work about the power of communication through text and picture, and diverse visual essays.
One project that acts as a representation of Océane’s love of film is Godard / Truffaut a three-book collection about “a Nouvelle Vague relationship”. The term translates as French New Wave and is used to describe numerous French directors in the 1950s and 60s. It is regularly referenced as a source of influence for designers, directors and artists alike. Océane’s publication is an appreciation of the influence of Jean Luc Godard and Francois Truffart, referencing infamous scenes from their work with analytical explanations.
Océane’s “growing fascination for cinematic images with their narrative potential” has allowed the designer to create ANIMA, five different hypothesis’ of an unfinished movie. The book is inspired by “concepts used by the novelist J.L Borges such as symbolism and surrealism, randomness, encryption and infinite”. It has a wealth of possibilities for interpretation itself, through "an infinite combination of pages – the project presents a whole pallet of possibilities. Each book is a different object, film and story,” she explains. The result is a “book built as a labyrinth” with “an enigma to be solved” by the viewer.
