’Tis the season! But not that season, the new and fifth issue of Season zine is available for pre-order!
An independent mag which nestles in boldly between fashion and football has garnered a dedicated following for consistently empowering women in football culture, shouting their many talents on and off the pitch. In brilliant timing, Season’s latest issue is released just in time for the World Cup this summer, for readers to get excited and swotted up on the culture that surrounds the sport.
In its fifth issue Season explores the theme of religion, from religious players to the idea of the game itself being a religious event that you follow every Saturday afternoon. “Andrew Brown wrote ‘The most blinding and obvious deficiency of football as a religion is that it lacks any kind of theology — and excludes many women,’ for The Guardian in 2013; and we’re proving him wrong in our biggest issue to date,” the magazine declares. “While there’s still work to be done, woman are arguably more included and visible in football culture in 2018 and in our opinion, total football, Pep Guardiola’s zonal philosophy and supporters’ rituals can be classed as theology.”
In turn, the magazine’s spreads are full of various editorial and visual explorations of this subject. From an interview between broadcaster Jeanette Kwakye chatting to former Chelsea Ladies footballer to Eni Aluko about their relationship with religion, singer-songwriter and Fulham Ladies player Chelcee Grimes’ on her love for Liverpool FC, Catholic, Jewish and Sikh football fans exploring their club’s religious identity, the hijab in football culture, all the way through to football chants and chaplains.
In its biggest issue yet Season has gone in depth on one subject but in a way which remains inclusive, diverse and visually versatile, jumping between illustrated and photographic features. The issue also comes accompanied with a set of collectable stickers taken from the contributors’ favourite players — an item you definitely need in the run-up to the World Cup.
“With the World Cup (essentially a football pilgrimage every four years) kicking off this month, and the Heavenly Bodies — Fashion and the Catholic Imagination exhibition at the Met Museum, it seemed timely to explore religion and faith via the female-focused football and fashion stories we tell."
