Our poor postman is going to need a nice cuppa and a good long sit down this weekend after lugging so many parcels full of creative delights to our studio the past few days. Making the cut we have a collection of Jonny Hannah’s artwork, a tote bag bursting with awesome illustrated t-shirts and a calendar full of pictures of meat. Yep, you heard me. Accompanying this troop of treats is a children’s book about a ghost having a great time by Antonio Ladrillo and some snazzy soap. Bet you’re all in a lather now, so let’s commence.

A booklet with a black cover features a white, rounded figure with a blue smile and two mismatched eyes in red and yellow. Text at the top reads “Being a ghost is cool!”.

Do you remember the brilliant Osborne children’s books with the little yellow duck surreptiously hiding himself on every page? Antonio Ladrillo’s saddle-stitched story does something similar, sneaking ghostly traces of flowers and smiling faces onto the page. It’s sweet and simple, painting in just four colours. I also love the tag line on Antonio’s website which translates as: “Antonio Ladrillo is an illustrator, graphic artist, editor and father of a large family of extraordinary creatures.”

If you haven’t actually heard of Jonny Hannah, you’ll almost certainly have seen his work. From stacks of book jacket designs – like Penguin re-vamps of John Steinbeck novels – to editorial illustrations for Condé Nast and New York Times, his patterned paintings and scruffy drawings are everywhere. Greetings from Darktown is a miscellany of Hannah’s “folk art for the twenty-first century,” featuring essays by writers and designers which explore the artist’s influences and themes and the stories he tells.

In the world of dazzling t-shirt design, The Illustrated Mind company in Brighton is rubbing shoulders with our very own Company of Parrots. Making us ooh and aaa this week, they sent through designs by Ed Cheverton and Tom Sewell, but they also work with Pippa Toole, Daisy Gam and James Reuben, to name just a few. Summing up their style, they say, “We love bold and engaging prints, gnarly colours, and are never short of a few cult film references.”

This one’s not for the vegetarians amongst you, dear readers. Martin Fengel’s designed a calendar which is greasy, gruesome and oh so very meaty. Amongst the usual barbecue fare, there’re also some more adventurous numbers; whole grilled squids, eels and carcasses of unidentifiable beasts.

It isn’t often that one of our Things looks and smells amazing, but illustrator Louise Lockhart’s soap sure does. Packaged in lush pinks, blues and yellows, this soap says Christmas present for cousin/friend/next-door neighbour’s kid, sorted. Based in Yorkshire, Louise’s company The Printed Peanut makes cards, prints, stickers and even a pin the tail on the cat party game, all designed in her whimsical dreamy style.
