“Can I email you back on Monday? I’m actually in the desert this weekend,” was the reply we got from Tom Gould when we got in touch to see what he was up to a couple of weeks back. It might sound like the filmmaker’s equivalent of the dog eating your homework, but in Tom’s case it’s a wholly credible excuse, and even more so now that we can see the fruits of his labour.
He spent the weekend filming this music video to accompany Action Bronson’s new song Easy Rider, which is basically the equivalent of a feature film artfully squished into four minutes and 49 seconds. In it, the rapper plays a Vietnam veteran on a singlehanded and slightly skewiff mission to retrieve his guitar, aided by a heroine in high-waisted denim hotpants, a Native American on horseback, a hell of a lot of acid and a big old Harley Davidson. In short, it’s exactly what you’d imagine Easy Rider would sound like if you could watch it rather than just listening to it, made with as much grit, wit and bar fights as I’d like to imagine. It’s also one of the best things I’ve seen this summer. How many filmmakers do you know capable of magicking up an instant classic in a weekend, eh?
