Ward Heirwegh creates coherent visual accompaniments to exhibitions
Some graphic design projects seem straightforward; a lovely foil, and Bob’s your uncle! Others demand a bit more attention, however, and for those we call in the likes of Ward Heirwegh. Based in Antwerp, Ward specialises in design for exhibitions, translating complex, abstract concepts into coherent, understandable printed accompaniments. In my opinion this branch of design requires a very specific and quite elusive skill for compressing and transforming information.
This project comprises the ephemera around an exhibition in six acts, entitled It’s a Kind of Magic, for Het Paviljoen. Ward’s visual manifestation of the show – a simple black and white publication which utilises bold but simple typographic treatments with pared back imagery to play upon the idea of the exhibition of play – communicates the message of the show without simplifying it. It’s clear but also a little aloof, and you’d be hard-pressed to pass it without picking it up.
