Pentagram partner Emily Oberman joined us for the very first event we had in New York. She shared some incredible insight into her work with SNL which had me so inspired. Following this, Emily unpicked her favourite ethos: the importance of “starting over”. It was a rare treat to see inside the mind of such a legendary graphic designer.

I remember sitting in the audience as Es Devlin walked on stage at Nicer Tuesdays, and I’ll happily admit I was a little starstruck. Es has brought creativity, quite literally, to the biggest stages in the world and to hear her reflect on 30 years of her career, from starting out at university right through to her most recent works, was as insightful as it was inspiring. What struck me more was her humility as an artist despite being behind some of the most renowned installations of the 21st century.

Back when Nicer Tuesday first started, the event was based around themes. For our Humour edition, multi-hyphenate creative Karl Toomey took to the stage to share his story behind Gary Goals – a creative experiment which got way out of hand. Obtuse, chaotic and full of laughs, Karl’s talk is a great example of how creativity and comedy can come together in the public eye.

What are the secrets to excellent storytelling? For filmmaker Timi Akindele-Ajani, the answer centres around three Ts: teleportation, telepathy, and transformation. Back in 2023, Timi took to the Nicer Tuesdays stage to reveal how he uses this framework throughout his practice, and more specifically, how it was used in the making of his short film Guests – a domestic drama shedding light on contemporary stories of racism. I was blown away by the level of care, detail and commitment behind Timi’s craft.

One talk I always remember was Alex Norris, the creator of internet sensation Webcomic name (the one that always ends ‘Oh no’!). I was a big fan already and it was so fun and fascinating to see how they came up with such a lovable, hilarious character and premise while “trying to be really clever” with their comic ideas, before pivoting to “lower expectations by making the worst comic I could make”.

I’m a Na Kim superfan! Everything she touches turns to gold – from the hundreds of book covers she’s designed, to all of the Paris Review’s art output. But what I loved so much about her talk in New York last year was how refreshingly honest it was. For someone with such an impressive and many-pronged practice, she was incredibly candid about how much of her early career involved shifting, redirecting and bluffing, proving how life’s ‘failures’ are never as momentous as they seem at the time, often leading to unpredictable but fruitful new beginnings. To boot, she has that perfectly dry sense of humour most people dream of being gifted with.
