Marking its 30th anniversary, Dazed onboards Ibrahim Kamara and Lynette Nylander as the new senior team

With a combined 25 years at Dazed, editor-in-chief Isabella Burley, fashion director Emma Wyman and art director Jamie Reid step down, handing over the baton to a new team.

Marking its 30th anniversary, Dazed Media has announced changes to its senior team as editor-in-chief Isabella Burley, fashion director Emma Wyman and art director Jamie Reid step down. The news comes as it launches its spring issue next month. They will hand the baton to Ibrahim Kamara as editor-in-chief and Lynette Nylander as executive editorial director.

It’s an exciting turn for the magazine and media group – a London-based company founded by Jefferson Hack and Rankin Waddel in 1991. Since its conception, Dazed has been an influential platform for youth culture across print, digital and video. Ibrahim, a Sierra Leone-born and London-based stylist and art director, has built a reputation for producing innovative, lawless work, the type that defies convention of what’s traditionally been perceived as masculine. He’s worked with various industry leading names such as Stella McCartney, Dior and Burberry; plus artists including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Madonna and Solange. He’s also been featured in British and Italian Vogue, Love, Double and AnOther, and joined i-D in 2018 as fashion editor before being promoted to senior fashion editor the following year.

Lynette Nylander, formerly the managing editor of cult publication Industry plus its accompanying agency Wednesday, has held titles at i-D as deputy editor and Teen Vogue. Namely a writer, editorial and creative director also based in London, she regularly contributes to Vogue, T Magazine, Elle, The Fader AnOther, Evening Standard amongst others. She’s also been appointed vice president of content at Alexander Wang and creative and editorial director at large for CR Fashion Book. Elsewhere, she’s consulted for brands including Pat McGRath Labs, Bike, XL Recordings, Fenty and Disney, and was the recipient of Forbes 30 under 30 Europe in 2017.

A reputable shift for the magazine, the incoming talent replaces a combined 25 years at Dazed from its previous team. Isabella joined the title in 2013 as fashion features editor and in 2015, at the age of 24, was named Dazed’s youngest editor-in-chief. She’s gone on to do great things for the publication – including iconic covers with Rihanna and Frank Ocean. “As we celebrate 30 years of Dazed, it’s with sheer pride that on this monumental occasion I step back from the magazine as editor-in-chief handing the baton over to a new team; my friend and long-time collaborator Lynnete Nylander and Ib Kamara whose visionary work continues to set the agenda in visual storytelling,” she says in the announcement.

Emma joined Dazed in 2009 after graduating from Central St. Martins and became fashion assistant to Karen Langley, former Dazed fashion director, before being promoted to senior fashion editor and then fashion director. Her cover story highlights include Pamela Anderson, Chelsea Manning and Billie Eilish. “I am happy to look to the future, and to see Lynette and Ib’s collective vision in action," she says in a statement.

Jamie has held his title as art director since 2015 and has overseen a logo update and a second redesign in 2015, creating a completely fresh incarnation of the magazine that marked a new shift in its visual language and contributions which, alongside the growing strength of the digital platform – plus the inclusion of Dazed Beauty marked the printed version as a more covetable “object" once again.

During Jamie’s time at Dazed, he developed the brand and visual tone across the board, working with the likes of Kiko Kostadinov, Mowalola, Rokh, Grace Wales Bonner and Chopova Lowena, plus adidas, Asics, Calvin Klein, Dashwood Books and Missoni. “The close of this chapter in my career evokes an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment through the work created alongside such a talented team, contributors, collaborates and friends forged over the years,” he says, “and I look forward to continuing the work we’ve begun.”

With the expected release of the upcoming issue next month and a Dazed 30th and Rizzoli Dazed 30th anniversary book designed by Jamie, this change turns the page on a new chapter for Dazed – and we look forward to great new things to come.
