From Miami to Ikea: Swedish House Mafia collaborate with the furniture store to stress the role of music in our homes

Apparently even the Swedish House Mafia – who provided the playlist to many of our pre-teen years – isn’t immune to the multidisciplinary urge of creatives living in this new age.

It’s 2012, you’re blasting Don’t You Worry Child with a Smirnoff Ice and without a care in the world… just kidding. But Swedish House Mafia is back in the game and on our radars, this time with a new… furniture line? The house music group has collaborated with build-it-yourself furniture giant and fellow Swedes, Ikea. The news was announced at the Ikea Festival with the collection planned to launch in September 2022. This new collection will showcase products that are designed to make it easier to get into a creative flow at home, with a focus on affordable home furnishing solutions for producing, playing, and listening to music.

Swedish House Mafia – consisting of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso – and Ikea wanted to recognise the important role that music plays in our homes and its ability to boost creativity, release stress, and make a space feel like home. Since everyone is apparently now a DJ, Ikea recognised how many people are making music at home, therefore, home is where their musical creativity begins to bloom. This feels especially important after a series of lockdowns which sometimes made our homes feel like cages rather than spaces for creativity and comfort. Ikea’s collaboration with Swedish House Mafia – who hails as one of the most successful artists in the electronic music industry – hopes to explore how to enable music creators and lovers to be more creative at home.

James Futcher, the product design leader at Ikea mentioned that, with the group’s “solid expertise in music production,” they hope to be able to “democratise creativity and music production so that even more people can be more creative at home.” Ikea wants to explore how, together with Grammy Award-nominated trio Swedish House Mafia, it can make everyday life easier for the many people listening to and creating music: “This collection will enable people to create the perfect home studio for an affordable price.”

The minds behind some of the greeted electronic hits of the past decade said that they “both wanted to reach out of [their] comfort zones and create something new and fresh together: a pure collaboration between music creators and a home expert.” The trio continues that they strongly felt “a need to collaborate with someone who shared our vision of making it possible for everyone to create music at home. As artists and producers, we also understand the importance of a home studio set-up and the needs and challenges many up-and-coming artists and creatives have at home.”

More information about the collection will be announced in the new year. Apologies in advance for getting Miami 2 Ibiza stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
