Jean Jullien's fab new show US provides a fitting finale for the Kemistry Gallery
Jean Jullien is many things. Artist. Illustrator. French. Recent emigre to New York. It’s Nice That favourite. So hot right now. He’s also the final artist to have a show at Kemistry Gallery’s current east London home before it closes its doors early next year (although as has been reported it has some excitingly ambitious plans).
Anyway it seems fitting that a gallery which showcases graphic arts is ending its current chapter with one of the best practitioners working today. From posters on the London Underground to Financial Times Magazine covers, Jean’s work seems to be everywhere at the moment but this exhibition is a good chance to go back to what we think Jean does best.
“It’s about the small changes we go through together, capturing the funny moments we often miss or take for granted,” Jean says about the work going on display, and these wonderful visual one-liners that manage to flit between cutting satire and poignant meditations on the contemporary human condition. The show marks a fitting end to Kemistry’s ten years in Charlotte Road, and allows us to get up close and personal with one of our absolute favourite creative minds.
