Photography: Jose Porroche finds undiscovered gems on the beaches and streets of Barcelona

Spanish photographer Jose Porroche doesn’t think he’s a professional photographer and in the literal sense he’s probably right; nobody’s paying him any money for his images. But that’s not to say that this amateur photographer doesn’t have as much talent in his shutter-snapping little finger as some of the pros out there. In fact we’d wager he’s better than some folks that draw an honest wage from their camera.

Jose’s shots of his native Barcelona focus on the minutiae of this sprawling city, picking out details that few would spot in passing; an old man with a jumper that matches his concrete perch, shadows playing off the leather seats of a parked car and the iridescent sheen of animal fat rendering slowly from a warm piece of salami. He’s also not afraid of capturing some of the uglier parts of the city, but manages to imbue them with a sense of excitement and energy that counteracts their aesthetic shortcomings. Amateur or otherwise Jose’s got talent, someone toss him some cash so he can go pro.

A red and white striped pedestrian crossing leads towards a small outdoor cafe. A sign above the entrance reads “BAR TERMINAL C” against a large, white ribbed wall with a blue stripe.

A person wearing a thong stands in the open doorway of a grey car, leaning forward against the roof. They are seen from behind, looking out over a calm body of water towards a distant breakwater.

A small table covered in a white checkered cloth sits in a patch of bright sunlight. A napkin holder branded “San Miguel” and a single fork on an orange placemat are the only items on the table.
