Ben Drury, Jiro Bevis and Sara Andreasson celebrate the global stages of sport for Nike
Ben Drury, Jiro Bevis and Sara Andreasson have been commissioned by Nike to design a set of patches and pins for a limited edition collaboration. As a brief, each illustrator was a given a city that has hosted, or will host, the summer Olympic Games and asked to reflect on either the past, present or future of the sport and the location.
Ben was handed the brief for a London design, which shows St Paul’s Cathedral as a pirate radio transmitter, to symbolize the impending switch off of the FM signal in 2018. ‘It’s a comment about not forgetting what we already have at the expense of the new and spectacular,” says Ben. Jiro’s Rio design features Brazilian dancers aboard a carnival float, against the backdrop of a jaguar. “My main aim was to get across the fun, party feeling that you associate with Brazil and Rio carnival in particular,” he says. For Sara’s Tokyo design she looked to encapsulate the essence of the city focusing on technology and food. “Tokyo is a city that manages to constantly evolve while still maintaining its traditions, therefore the design features both conventional and futuristic elements,” says the illustrator.
The work has been available to buy in limited quantities over the past two weekends at NikeTown London. The final set in the collaboration, Tokyo by Sara Andreasson, will be available in-store this Saturday.
