For Gabriella Brown, being a DJ and a designer is a match made in heaven
Favouring a hand-drawn aesthetic, the Melbourne-based creative wants her musical designs to evoke the sensation of sound waves.

Here at It’s Nice That, we've learnt that people who love music are usually pretty good at designing for the industry. Gabriella Brown takes this fact one step further. A local DJ in her native Melbourne, Gabriella is an “avid” member of the city’s dance music scene, always searching for ways that the visualisers and lighting of a night can influence her designs. Taking an experimental approach, Gabriella enjoys leading with intuition, and she often begins with sketches of abstract shapes – or “gloops”, as she likes to call them. Then, she transfers her works to Photoshop, using brushes and effects “to blur them out, roughen them up or warp them into something new".
Outside of music, Gabriella is also inspired by wobbly graffiti graphics, dripping wax, the ocean and lava lamps. But, usually, they tend to circle back to sound waves: “I love focussing on things that have fluidity to them because there’s a sense of looseness or freedom in them, which ultimately reflects sound.”
