Tickets are now available for Nicer Tuesdays London, on 5 May at EartH Hackney, featuring another selection of brilliant creatives curated just for you!
We’ll be welcoming artist Murugiah, whose debut solo exhibition will be opening at the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration this month, as he speaks on the process of creating this new slew of painted, oddball characters. As well as that, Amber Weaver, the founder and director of Type01 Magazine and font marketplace Type Department will be joining us to discuss her creative outlets and expansion across type-focused platforms. Togolese-German photographer Delali Ayivi, whom we featured last year for her fantastic Wimbledon photos, will be sharing the stage to talk about her work and various themes surrounding Togolese identity; and Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson will be sharing how they created the mystical (and terrifying) animated homunculi from the BBC show Small Prophets.
Make sure to get down to the event at 6pm when the doors open to have the chance to grab a drink and snack from our sponsors El Rayo Tequila and Lovecorn. The event will take place on Tuesday 5 May at EartH in Hackney. Doors will open at 6pm and the talks will begin around 7:15pm. The full address is EartH, 11-17 Stoke Newington Rd, London N16 8BH.
Please be aware that photography and filming may be taken at this event for marketing and promotional purposes. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed, please speak to our team on the day. If you have access requirements please make yourself known to a member of the EartH team on the night or email hello@nicertuesdays.com so we can arrange assistance.
Murugiah is a multi-disciplinary British Sri Lankan artist, illustrator and designer working in London. Commissioned to create art works for Refugee Week, London Design Week and Young V&A, the surrealist and macabre artist delves into the colourful and playful aesthetics of bittersweet daily life. His debut solo exhibition opening in May at Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration is called Murugiah: Ever Feel Like… and at Nicer Tuesdays, the artist will take the audience through his kaleidoscopic world and large, human-scale works.
Amber Weaver is a graphic designer and founder of Type01, a type-led creative media platform, Type Department, a font marketplace, and TypeOne, a type design magazine. As well as that, Amber authored Femme Type, a book that celebrates type designers who identify as being a woman and are an active member of the type industry and community. The prolific designer will join the Nicer Tuesdays lineup to delve into the Type01 ecosystem, from the creation of the magazines to original typefaces – as well as championing new and underrepresented voices in type design.
Delali Ayivi is a Togolese-German photographer based in London and Lomé, recognised for her work exploring identity and authentic storytelling. For her photographic series Heimat (In Quarantine), she won the Foam Talent 2021 title, and she has shot photos for British Vogue, fabric brand Vlisco and PhotoVogue, focusing on the plurality of the female gaze and emotional landscapes. Moving between personal research and collective experience, her practice seeks to create space for more complex, self-defined representations of Togolese and diasporic identity. At Nicer Tuesdays, Delali will reflect on how image-making has allowed her to question oversimplified, Western-framed stories often imposed on Togolese identities.
Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson are BAFTA-winning, stop motion animators known for The Making of Longbird and the feature-length film A Cat Called Dom. Recognised by their penchant for tactile and organic animation styles, It’s Nice That recently interviewed Will and Ainslie for their stunning work on Mackenzie Crook’s oddball TV show Small Prophets – and at Nicer Tuesdays, the animating duo will share even more on the creative journey to bring the show’s mythical homunculi to life through animated alchemy.
